Finally decided to become an accountant?
Good. Now it’s time to take a step forward and take the plunge.
First things first..
Get A Degree
Although there are exceptions, an accounting degree, or at least in a related field, is usually preferred by employers in hiring their accountant.
And if you plan to become a CPA, check the board exam requirements in your country if they require you to be a graduate of a specific degree to be able to take the exam.
For example, in the Philippines, only graduates of BS Accountancy can take the CPA Board Exam. You can’t take the exam even if your course is related to accounting.
So definitely consider that when choosing a degree.
Decide What Path to Take
While you learn in college, start planning what career path you want to take. Start asking yourself questions like;
- Should I take the board Exam?
- What industry to specialize in?
- Do I want to be an Auditor? A Tax Preparer? A CPA Lawyer? Etc.
- Do I want to start a business?
The answer to those questions will help you prepare for your future.
Get an Internship
After answering the questions above and knowing what path you want to take, get an internship.
Target firms or companies in the industry you want to be in and take that opportunity to learn more, build your network and gain experience.
If you still haven’t decided what you want for the future, I recommend you to go to an audit firm.
Audit firms expose you to different companies and industries. Although some say that audit work is hard, it is a good training ground and opportunity for you to learn a lot.
Find A Job
After graduation, it’s now time to find a job.
Like in your internship, apply to companies that will help you gain more knowledge and experience in the industry or the position you want to specialize in.
Take Board Exam
If you decided to be a CPA, it is now time to prepare and take the board exam. Armed with knowledge you got in college and experience from work, you’re now ready to level up your career.
Other Certifications
Besides the CPA board exam, there are also other certifications that will help you further increase your career opportunities and also, your salary.

- Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
- Certified Financial Analyst (CFA)
- Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA)
Continue Learning
At this stage, you may already know, learning doesn’t stop after you get your diploma.
I know some have the impression that after college, they’re done, they’re “free”. But as a professional, you should, at the very least, be updated to any news or changes in the industry.
And if you are a CPA, Continuing Education is already a requirement and not an option.
Conclusion
Becoming an Accountant may be a long road ahead, besides the educational requirements, you also need to have motivation, a lot of willpower and a strong commitment.
You’ll face a lot of roadblocks and challenges, but at least it’s not boring.
